El Kanna

Exodus 20:5

THE GOD WE NEED

Day 9: El Kanna

By the Gardener

"You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God." (Exodus 20:5, NIV)

🌾

There is a need that surfaces when love feels uncertain. The relationships that come and go based on convenience. The affection that seems to depend on your performance. And underneath it, a quiet question. Does anyone actually want me, not just what I offer them?

🌱

At Sinai, in the middle of the commandments, God gave Israel a name that startles many readers at first. El Kanna, the Jealous God.

Kanna does not carry the small, insecure jealousy familiar to human relationships. It describes the fierce protectiveness of a husband who will not share his bride, the passionate loyalty of love that refuses to be divided. God was not confessing insecurity. He was declaring the intensity of His devotion.

🌻

This is how He meets the need to be loved without condition or rival. He does not offer a portion of His attention alongside other gods, other pursuits, other loves competing for your heart. He wants all of you, because He has given all of Himself.

A love that would share you is not a love worth trusting. His jealousy is the proof of how much you are wanted.

He does not love you a little. He loves you fiercely, wholly, and without rival.

🌿

Prayer

El Kanna, jealous God, thank You that Your love for me is fierce and whole. Guard my heart from lesser loves, and hold me close to Yours alone. Amen.
